When I’m sixty-four

when-im-641When I get older, losing my hair
Many years from now
Will you still be sending me a valentine
Birthday greetings, bottle of wine?

It was going to be ‘many years from now’ when I first played this Beatles song at gigs in 1967, but the future snuck up on me. Rudely. I hit 64 this week and of course I had to go to the piano and play the song again. My hair might have gone grey (though it’s largely all there), but thankfully I played the tune as well as ever.

If I’d been out till, quarter to three
Would you lock the door?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I’m sixty-four?

So far, so good. And I haven’t done the quarter to three thing since I gave up professional musicking, many years ago.

An interesting Wikipedia entry about When I’m 64 is here.
