- 22/05/1884 - First New Zealand rugby team in actionThe first representative New Zealand rugby team played its first match, defeating a Wellington XV 9-0 before embarking on a tour of New South Wales.
- 22/05/1995 - Waikato-Tainui sign Deed of Settlement with the Crown Waikato–Tainui was the first iwi to reach a Treaty of Waitangi settlement with the Crown for injustices that went back to the 1860s. The Deed of Settlement included cash and land valued at a total of $170 million.
